Do you understand English but struggle to speak confidently? Discover why this happens and how regular conversation practice can really enhance your fluency.
Have you ever watched an English film, listened to a podcast or read an article and understood almost everything, only to struggle when it's your turn to speak? If so, you're not alone.
This is one of the most common frustrations I hear from learners around the world.
The good news is that it's completely normal, and it's something we can improve. This improvement is very achievable and with my help, I’m sure we can make those key advances in your communicative fluency.
Understanding and speaking are different skills
Many people spend years studying grammar, completing exercises and learning vocabulary.
These activities build excellent understanding, but speaking requires something different.
You need to retrieve words quickly, build sentences naturally and respond in real time. This is all part of ‘active language use’ or ‘active vocabulary use’.
Like any skill, this only develops through regular practice and requires much conscious focus.

Stop translating
Many learners translate every sentence from their first language before speaking.
This slows conversations and makes you lose confidence. By making your listening comprehension/processing happen at a slower pace, you find yourself at a real disadvantage in listening situations.
Instead, we gradually train your brain to think directly in English. This doesn't happen overnight, but with consistent practice it becomes much easier.
Mistakes are part of fluency
One of the biggest obstacles isn't grammar - it's fear.
Students often know exactly what they want to say but stay silent because they worry about making mistakes. Ironically, making mistakes is one of the fastest ways to improve. A supportive learning environment helps you become more confident every week. Having the confidence to engage in conversation is absolutely crucial as a language learner.
Conversation builds confidence
Speaking regularly with an experienced teacher gives you opportunities to:
improve pronunciation
expand your vocabulary
correct common grammar mistakes
develop natural expressions
become more confident in everyday conversations
Small improvements soon become noticeable and the range of your language use will be hugely widened.
Learning should be well tailored, individualised and fun.
I've taught students from many different countries and cultures during my time living in Brazil, Mexico, Costa Rica, Spain, Portugal and Kuwait.
Every learner has different goals, whether preparing for work, travelling abroad, studying or simply feeling more confident speaking English. I have taught huge amounts of General English and Business English and this has been made relevant to people’s life interest, line of work, existing knowledge and much more.
Lessons should be practical, relaxed and focused on your individual needs. Great flexibility and attention is involved in making classes truly relevant and focused on each individual student.
Learning languages can be a source of much satisfaction and I use various elements and exercises to ensure classes have an element of levity, humour and serve as a source of enjoyment- a moment to look forward to in the day.
Ready to become more fluent?
If you've reached the point where you understand English but don't yet feel confident speaking it, you're probably much closer to fluency than you think. With regular conversation practice, personalised feedback and clear guidance, you'll soon find yourself speaking more naturally, effectively and confidently.
I'd be delighted to help you on that journey through friendly, one-to-one online lessons tailored to your goals.
Best wishes,
James
