Are you preparing for an English-speaking job interview? Discover practical tips to improve your confidence, speak naturally and make a strong first impression.
If you've been invited to an interview in English, congratulations! It's an exciting opportunity but it's also completely normal to feel anxious.
Many of my students tell me the same thing:
"I know my English is good enough, but I'm worried I'll freeze when I'm asked a question."
The good news is that interview English is a skill you can prepare for. You don't need perfect English to succeed. You need clear communication, confidence and practice.

Learn answers, not scripts
One of the biggest mistakes candidates make is memorising long answers. Unfortunately, this often sounds unnatural and can make you panic if the interviewer asks something unexpected.
Instead, prepare key ideas and useful vocabulary. Think about your experience, achievements and career goals, but practise explaining them naturally in your own words.
Practise speaking aloud
Reading interview questions isn't enough.
Your mouth needs practice as much as your brain.
Record yourself answering common questions such as:
Tell me about yourself.
Why do you want this job?
What are your strengths?
Describe a challenge you've overcome.
Listening back may feel uncomfortable at first, but it's one of the fastest ways to improve.
Don't aim for perfect grammar
Many learners stop speaking because they're searching for the perfect sentence.
Interviewers are far more interested in whether you communicate clearly than whether every verb tense is perfect.
Fluent communication always makes a stronger impression than hesitant perfection.
Improve your pronunciation
Clear pronunciation helps interviewers understand you immediately.
As a native British English teacher who also speaks Spanish and Portuguese fluently, I understand the pronunciation difficulties many learners experience. We can focus on the sounds that are most challenging for speakers of your first language.
Practise realistic interviews
The best preparation is a realistic mock interview.
Together we can practice:
common interview questions
ways to deal with unexpected questions
business vocabulary
natural answers
conveying interest in the employer and ways which your skills could boost their productivity.
pronunciation
confidence under pressure
By the time your real interview arrives, it will feel much more familiar.
Final thoughts
A successful interview isn't about speaking perfect English.
It's about communicating your experience, personality and abilities with confidence.

around the world through online lessons tailored to your goals, helping you feel calm, prepared and
ready to perform at your best.
Best wishes,
James
